KEY POINTS:
Former Silver Fern Vilimaina Davu appears to have done an about-turn and is now considering coaching Fiji at next year's world championships in Fiji.
Davu at first denied she was in line for the job but yesterday said she had been approached by Netball Fiji and was thinking about it.
"They have contacted me. I am still in the process of sorting stuff out - nothing has been confirmed yet. It is an amazing opportunity," she said.
Since news broke of her retirement, Davu's name has been linked with Fiji. It has even been suggested that talks between Davu and Netball Fiji president Alisi Tabeto began before the powerful defender announced her retirement from the Silver Ferns.
Davu, who played 55 games for Fiji before switching to New Zealand in 2000, rejects this claim.
She said yesterday Netball Fiji had contacted her only a couple of days ago and asked her to coach. There had been no discussion about her playing.
International rules state that if a player has played for one country in a world championship - as Davu did for New Zealand in 2003 - she cannot play for another in the following one.
There are exceptions, one that relates to a player being allowed to play for her country of birth. But before that happens it would have to be approved by the international netball federation board.
Tabeto could not be contacted for comment last night.
Fiji is looking for a coach after the resignation of Australian Megan Simpson in August. Canterbury's Marg Foster applied but later withdrew, choosing to stay at the helm of the Canterbury Flames.
It is understood six coaches, apart from Davu, are in the running.
Australian Julie Hoornweg, who coached Fiji from 1998 to 1999, was believed to be a strong contender, although the Fiji Times reported that the Melbourne Phoenix coach decided against applying so she could concentrate on her club commitments and work with the Victorian Institute of Sport.
* The Otago Rebels have confirmed they have signed Australian defender Demelza Fellowes for next season.
