Netball, golf, cricket and soccer were the big winners when the Hillary Commission yesterday announced the carve-up of $4.4 million in funding to leading national sports organisations this financial year.
The funding will be divided between 61 national bodies, which will receive between $285,000 and $10,000. A further 22 smaller national bodies will share $129,500 in grants of less than $10,000 each.
Netball received the top allocation of $285,000, followed by golf on $210,000. Cricket and soccer each receive $200,000 while bowls, hockey, tennis, touch football, rugby league and yachting round out the top 10.
New Zealand Soccer, under siege since the Charlie Dempsey World Cup debacle, have received a funding boost for the second consecutive year in the week the All Whites jumped 12 spots to 95th in the Fifa rankings.
Soccer's funding has increased from $135,000 to $200,000 in the past two years.
The commission bases its funding allocations on the sport's membership and its performance in achieving results.
Equestrian dropped $5000 to $75,000 but the decrease was "nothing to do with the Mark Todd affair," says commission spokesman John Boyd.
