KEY POINTS:
Netball Australia has backed New Zealand's offer to host next year's world championships in November, saying it would rather see a world-class event later in the year than a second-rate tournament in July.
Fiji was stripped of the world championship tournament after the military coup there.
Netball NZ yesterday said it could host the event, but not in July.
It has told the world body (IFNA) it could host a tournament in November that would ensure the sport's showcase event was not compromised.
Netball Australia chief executive Kate Palmer said her organisation would support New Zealand wholeheartedly.
"We would be very pleased if it went ahead next year. Whatever we can do to help New Zealand put on the world championships we will do. "
Palmer said trying to host anything but a world class event would undermine the sport.
"If a nation put its hand up and said it could do it in July then we'd help them as well, but our preference would be for it to be run as a world netball championships and be given the status it deserves."
Yesterday, IFNA chief executive Sue Whitworth said the organisation would prefer the tournament to go ahead in July.
"We have always said our preference would be for a country to take it on at the same time. We have always said that in doing it at that time there are going to be compromises and that is something the board has to look at -whether it has all the trimmings, some of the trimmings or is just a straight competition.
"It's a decision we will have to make if another country comes back and says it can host it in July.
"New Zealand and Australia are two of the best countries in the world at hosting events but we are not ruling anyone out at this stage."
Australia has said it cannot host the 16-team tournament next year, and IFNA is waiting to hear from England and Jamaica.
It has said it will make an announcement by Christmas.
If Australia and New Zealand - the heavyweights of world netball - cannot host the tournament in July, it would be surprising if Jamaica or England is able to do so.
Jamaica hosted the last event, and is keen to host it again. Netball Jamaica president Marva Bernard said her organisation was working hard to find sponsors. Finding a venue, accommodation and volunteers would not be a problem.
If INFA is prepared to let a "no frills" event to go ahead in July, Jamaica could be the choice. The IFNA board is headed by Jamaican Molly Rhone and members include Bernard and Annette Beckett of Barbados.
Netball NZ board chairman Don Mackinnon said his body would be disappointed if a substandard tournament went ahead in July.
"There may be other countries that believe they have the infrastructure to cope with a July tournament. I would be surprised, but it would be unfair to count it out."
