Silver Ferns coach Ruth Aitken will switch from spy to selector over the next month in preparation for her team's test series against Australia in June and July.
The national squad returned from Australia yesterday where they were unbeaten in eight matches against Australian Commonwealth Bank trophy teams.
The New Zealanders were pushed only once - they had to come from behind to beat Adelaide Thunderbirds 47-45.
The 16-member squad included 12 players who claimed the World Championship last year, former Silver Ferns Victoria Edward and Angela Mitchell and newcomers Joline Henry and Laura Langman.
"We changed combinations frequently and it was great to see how they adapted," Aitken said. "There was some really good netball but nowhere near as consistent as we will need to be later in the year. For pre-season stuff it was pretty good."
Aitken was particularly pleased with Edward and Henry.
"We were looking to build that depth in the squad and ensure that we have players who are ready to take the step up when the call comes.
"We were very successful in that respect. They have closed the gap and are keeping the incumbents very honest."
With the National Bank Cup starting on April 17, Aitken heads to England this month to watch the home side's series against Australia before returning home to resume her role as a selector.
The New Zealand team to face Australia will be named in May.
"What I hope to see in the National Bank Cup is the New Zealand squad members showing out and wanting to get to an even higher level.
"I need to see their high fitness levels and ability to come through."
