Playing a round of golf in Auckland can be a frustrating experience, as you are forced to wait around on every tee for the succession of foursomes playing a leisurely game up ahead.
A new type of speedy golf, due to be launched in Auckland next month, could be the answer.
Xtreme Golf is the brainchild of two young Auckland businessmen. Its novel method of scoring is to combine time - so it is, in effect, a race - with strokes taken.
A best-selling book about life on golf's PGA Tour a few years ago was called "A Good Walk Spoiled".
Well, there's no chance of golf ever being a leisurely stroll, under the rules of Xtreme golf.
The format is simple: players will tee off at 2-minute intervals, with their start time being noted. They are permitted to carry two clubs of their choice, and a putter. Overtaking is, naturally, part of the game.
Players have to complete nine holes, at which stage their elapsed time, plus the number of strokes they took, are consolidated into their overall score.
The first Xtreme golf tournament will be held on South Auckland's Wattle Downs course on January 22nd.
It's golf - but not as we know it
No time to stand around admiring your last shot, in Xtreme Golf.
