A kane IIjima, a 20-year-old from Japan, won the Auckland women's championship at Titirangi yesterday with some impressive golf in difficult conditions.
IIjima, who plays at the Pakuranga Club, beat Lesley Going from Titirangi 5 and 3 in the final as the rain which had haunted the championship finally set in.
In the semifinals Iijima had beaten Brigit Holford (The Grange) one up after an epic struggle, with the Japanese level par for the 18 holes and Holford one worse.
A feature of the match was an eagle by Iijima on the par-five 12th, where she holed her third shot from 90m.
Going, a six-handicapper, continued her giant-killing by downing Hamilton 16-year-old Stephanie Slavich 3 and 2.
The final was close for the first nine holes with Iijima one up at the turn. But she then won four holes in a row before clinching victory on the 15th.
The Auckland team for the interprovincial championships in Invercargill comprises Brigit Holford (The Grange), La Nahi (Onewhero), Enu Chung (Manukau), Jessica Park (Pakuranga) and Natasha Krishna (Auckland). The reserve is Kristin Farrell (Titirangi).
