Penny Newbrook's omission from the New Zealand team to play the Queen Sirikit Cup amateur women's golf event has surprised former national representative Brenda Ormsby.
Newbrook, 21, of Rotorua, has been named as the non-travelling reserve for next month's tournament in Thailand.
Sarah Nicholson, of Wellington, Sharon Ahn, of North Harbour, and Natasha Krishna, of Auckland, will contest the Asia Pacific teams event.
Nicholson is the only survivor of the New Zealand team who finished ninth in the last Queen Sirikit Cup.
Ormsby, who won 15 national titles and represented New Zealand in a career spanning three decades before turning professional, has kept a close eye on Newbrook in her coaching role at Springfield Golf Club.
"It surprises me, especially after her [Newbrook's] showing at the Tasman Cup," Ormsby said.
Newbrook, omitted from the national senior side for the first time since 2003, was unbeaten at No 3 when New Zealand won the biennial event for the first time in a decade from Australia in Auckland last month.
