KEY POINTS:
Manawatu-Wanganui were singing in the rain after upsetting more favoured teams to win the Freyberg Masters interprovincial golf title at Feilding yesterday.
Manawatu-Wanganui won the provincial crown for players 40 years and over for only the second time after a dramatic day in which the final round was cancelled because of heavy rain.
The morning round was delayed for three hours after a heavy downpour left the course waterlogged.
After some hasty work, teams were able to complete the morning's eighth round, but organisers had to cancel the final afternoon round.
The dramatic finale did not end there, as both leading teams, Manawatu-Wanganui and Auckland, lost in the morning round.
Organisers awarded each team 2 1/2 games and 1/2 a point for the cancelled final round, which gave Manawatu-Wanganui the title with six wins and 25 1/2 individual games.
Canterbury, who beat Manawatu-Wanganui in the morning, finished runners-up.
They also had six wins but they were edged out on a countback of individual games.
Auckland, the form team for most of the week, had to settle for third place with 5 1/2 wins. Wellington were fourth, Taranaki fifth and Tasman sixth.
Auckland looked to be in command against Northland but the northerners rallied to win 3-2 with two matches decided on the final green.
Manawatu-Wanganui lost to Canterbury 2-3.
