A disastrous quadruple bogey saw Tauranga golfer Josh Geary drop out of the reckoning yesterday in the final round of the Porter Cup, a US amateur tour event.
Geary, sixth going into the final-round of the tournament, shot a final round six-over 76 to fade to a share of 26th place at the Niagara Falls Golf Club in southern Ontario.
He registered a four-round total of 282, two over par, to finish 12 shots behind Californian Seung-su Han.
Compatriot Mark Purser (Hamilton) shot a final-round two-over 72 for a share of 45th place on six-over 286.
Geary, who fired a brilliant six-under 64 in the third round to push into contention, had a jumbled day that included four birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and a telling quadruple bogey eight at the ninth hole.
Purser mixed three birdies with five bogeys in his final round, won by Han at 10-under par, two shots clear of fellow Americans Andrew Parr (Texas) and Richard Berkmeyer (Missouri).
The pair move on to the top-rated Western Amateur in Michigan this week.
Meanwhile, former NZ Open champion Simon Owen has moved inside the top 20 going into the final round of the British Senior Open at Turnberry.
Owen managed the windy conditions better than most to move to a share of 18th behind leader Loren Roberts.
