KEY POINTS:
Hamilton golfer Mark Purser grabbed his first professional victory yesterday when he won the $40,000 Tauranga Open. He came from seven shots back to fire a brilliant eight-under 63 in the final round to edge out overnight leader Leighton James by one shot at Tauranga Golf Club.
The tournament is held under the umbrella of Golf Tour New Zealand, established by former touring professional Greg Turner to provide opportunities for young New Zealand pros and leading amateurs.
Purser reduced his overnight deficit to two shots after 11 holes, and was within one shot when James bogeyed the 16th. He claimed the outright lead by slotting a 2m eagle putt on the par-five 17th. James left a birdie putt just short on the final hole when he sought to force a playoff.
