KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - A stirring late charge from New Zealand's young golfers saw them fall just short of an upset victory over Australia in the inaugural Trans-Tasman Cup in Canberra today.
Australia clinched the cup 24-1/2 to 23-1/2 by winning both of the final girls' foursomes matches at the Royal Canberra club.
New Zealand trailed 11-13 overnight and were three matches adrift after the morning's singles today, leaving them needing to win six of the eight foursomes matches in the afternoon.
The males did their bit with a clean sweep of their foursomes, all narrow victories with New Zealand's Gary John Hill and Nick Gillespie the most convincing with a 3 and 2 win over Matthew Giles and Jason Scrivener.
But Dasom Lee and Yeon Song Kim were the only female New Zealand pair to win, 3 and 2 over Emma Bennett and Kate Combes.
New Zealand's star of the morning rounds was youngster Larissa Eruera who beat Grace Lennon 6 and 4 in their singles match.
James Gill, Danny Lee, Samuel Shin, Sean Riordan, Gillespie and Dasom Lee were the unbeaten New Zealanders in their two matches today.
