KEY POINTS:
Experienced Bay of Plenty golfer Penny Newbrook was bundled out of the New Zealand Women's Amateur Championship in Taupo yesterday.
Newbrook, 22, was beaten 2 and 1 by national strokeplay champion Kim Yeon Song, of Pupuke, in the second round at Taupo Golf Club.
It was the only major upset, and an otherwise predictable group qualified for today's quarter-finals.
They include top qualifier Oh Ji Soo, of Westown, who plays Christchurch's Dana Kim.
National junior representative Lee Dasom, 17, of Pakuranga, will play Huapai's Cathryn Bristow, who is on a break from her golf scholarship in the United States.
In the bottom half of the draw, former national junior representative Amy Smith, of Manawatu, meets Welsh visitor Lydia Hall, and Kim will face 14-year-old Larissa Eruera, of Aviation.
Oh, 15, was again impressive as she accounted for Jenna Hunter 6 and 5 in the first round and was comfortably home 3 and 2 over national junior representative Lisa Wright of Nelson in the second round.
Wright was forced to the 23rd hole to get through her first round.
Lee Dasom received a fright in the first round when she needed to win the last hole to beat Krystle Kearns, of Mt Maunganui.
But she blitzed talented 12-year-old Cecelia Cho 7 and 6 in the afternoon.
Eruera produced golf that belied her tender years, winning 4 and 3 over Sarah Vining of Manawatu in the first round, and 5 and 4 over May Chang, of Waitikiri, in the afternoon.
It was the Kim-Newbrook match that caught most attention in the afternoon .
The Rotorua player was in sparkling form after a win in the Harvey Norman Classic in Manawatu and leading Bay of Plenty to victory in the interprovincials.
Newbrook was not helped when she was hit by an errant golf ball midway through her round, and constant pressure from the current strokeplay champion was too much for her.
Quarter-finals and semifinals are today, and the 36-hole final is tomorrow.
