An eagle on the fifth hole helped New Zealander golfer Danny Lee shoot a one-under 71 in the opening round at the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, this morning (NZtime).
A composed Lee, playing his second United States PGA tournament since turning professional after last month's Masters, shrugged off four bogeys to knock home an eagle on the par 5 fifth, and birdies on the first, 12th and 14th holes.
With competitors still out on the course, the score put him in a tie for 29th, six shots behind world No 1 Tiger Woods who was the clubhouse leader with a 65.
An overawed Lee shot rounds of 76 and 75 in his professional debut at the Zurich Golf Classic of New Orleans last week and failed to make the cut by eight shots.
Woods, making his first start since a relatively disappointing Masters, stormed home with six birdies on his inward half on a pleasant spring morning at Quail Hollow.
He posted a bogey-free seven-under-par 65, three strokes ahead of fellow Americans Jeff Maggert, Hunter Mahan and Lucas Glover and South African Retief Goosen with nearly half the field back in the clubhouse.
