Christchurch golfer Aaron Mahoney completed a remarkable week when he won the North Island under-19 championship at Manukau yesterday.
Last Friday, during the New Zealand Open at The Grange course, the 18-year-old from Russley holed in one at the 15th.
On Wednesday, he shot a course record of 66, six under par, in the first round of the under-19 championship.
Yesterday, a third round of 73 for a 54-hole total of 210 was enough for a three-shot winning margin over 16-year-old Sam Hunt from Rotorua.
The big charge in the final round came from North Shore golfer James Davis, who closed to within one shot of Mahoney with nine holes to play.
But on the 11th, Davis three-putted for a bogey while Mahoney sank a long putt for par and the challenge vanished.
Davis finished on 214, losing third place to Eddie Lee (Waitikiri) when the Canterbury man holed his approach to the first play-off hole.
Mahoney won the South Island title last year. He is bidding to retain that and add the national crown at Muriwai in October.
