New Zealand golfer Danny Lee missed out on qualifying for the matchplay phase of the United States amateur championship by a single shot in Minnesota yesterday.
Lee, of Rotorua, fired a second round of two-over 73 to finish on 148 after 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying.
He ended in a share of 70th, with the top 64 qualifying for the matchplay starting today.
Lee, 16, was in excellent shape when he moved to one-under for his round after nine holes yesterday. Starting at the 10th, he made birdies at the 17th and 18th following a dropped shot at the 12th.
His round unravelled when he bogeyed the third followed by a double bogey at the par-three fourth.
Lee fought back with a birdie at the fifth but dropped a shot at the sixth.
A quarter-finalist in the recent US junior amateur, Lee was the first New Zealander to qualify for the US amateur since 1999.
Meanwhile, Perry Hayman was the leading New Zealand amateur after the first round of the Singapore Open.
He shot a two-under 69 for a share of fourth place, while James Gill shot 71 to be tied for 13th.
