New Zealand's Peter Spearman-Burn finished with a share of third place in the high-profile Asian amateur golf championships in China yesterday.
The Wellington player shot a final round even par 72 to finish on six-under at the super-tough World Cup course at Mission Hills in Shenzhen.
It was a case of nearly but not quite for the New Zealander, who was one shot behind runner-up Eric Chun (Korea) which would have earned him a place in the final international qualifying for the Open Championship at St Andrews next year.
Spearman-Burn again started with a roar, making four birdies and a dropped shot through nine holes, but reversed that with four bogeys and one birdie on the back nine.
He was seven-under playing the last, but failed to get up-and-down after a poor approach shot to drop back to a share of third with Korea's Meen-Whee Kim and Australian Jordan Sherratt.
It was an outstanding performance from Spearman-Burn. He had 13 birdies and just one dropped shot on the outward nine, but he was six over on the back nine for the week.
Korean Chang-Won Han won on 12-over par, earning him a start in next year's Masters Championship.
New Zealander Daniel Pearce had a final round eight-over 80 to finish in 50th place on 12-over.
