Europe's Ryder Cup captain Mark James shocked the golf world yesterday by naming Andrew Coltart of Scotland as one of his wild cards for the biennial match at Brookline next month.
James, as expected, picked in-form Swede Jesper Parnevik for his second team appearance as his first wild card selection.
But Coltart, who finished 12th in Europe's table after the BMW International Open which ended the qualifying year, came as a bombshell.
Nowhere was the shock felt more than in Germany where the home hero, the highly-experienced Bernhard Langer, was expected to get a call.
The US team trying to regain the Cup from September 24 to 26 contains just one rookie, world No 2 David Duval.
The full European team is: Colin Montgomerie (Britain), Lee Westwood (Britain), Darren Clarke (Britain), Paul Lawrie (Britain), Miguel Jimenez (Spain), Jose Maria Olazabal (Spain), Sergio Garcia (Spain), Jarmo Sandelin (Sweden), Jean Van de Velde (France), Padraig Harrington (Ireland), Jesper Parnevik (Sweden) and Andrew Coltart (Britain).
Meanwhile Montgomerie won his fifth title of the year at the BMW International. He rounded off with a two-under-par 70 for a 268, 20-under par, and three strokes ahead of Harrington, who shot a level-par 72 yesterday.
