The father of top New Zealand amateur Bradley Iles is hopeful his son will be removed from intensive care in a United States hospital today.
Peter Iles said doctors had told him that if the results of a brain scan today go as expected his son would be moved to a ward that is a level down from intensive care.
Bradley Iles, 20, has been in a Georgia hospital since fracturing his skull on Sunday night when he fell from a golf cart on which he was standing.
The accident happened about 10pm, five hours after he had competed in a tournament.
He was halfway through a two-month tour of North American summer tournaments and was not due to return home until August 23.
Up-coming US and Canadian amateur championships had been on the agenda.
Peter Iles said doctors yesterday had allowed his son to eat after checking that he could swallow properly, but his first offer of food was rejected.
"I think he's still trying to figure what the world's about. He has had quite a bit of morphine because he's in a bit of pain, so he's still a bit dozy.
"But as I understand it, now that he can eat they can give him different drugs that don't make him so drowsy."
Peter Iles said communication was restricted to just a few words.
A New Zealand insurance company had been in contact with the family to confirm all was in place for medical cover.
