ST ANDREWS, Scotland - Former British Open winning greats Tom Watson and Greg Norman believe Michael Campbell can win back-to-back golf majors this week at St Andrews.
Watson, winner of the British Open at his first attempt in 1975 and then champion in 1977, 1980, 1982 and again in 1983, spoke publicly of his delight in Campbell's US Open success last month.
"I told Michael I was very proud of the way he came back in the middle of his career after his wrist injury. I said to him that it made me feel very good to see him win at Pinehurst," Watson said.
"I always thought Michael was a very good player, but he wasn't getting much out of his game for a very long time.
"Then he had the injury, so for him to come back from that and win the US Open is a wonderful thing to happen for Michael and I was very happy for him."
Aside from his five British Open wins, Watson also claimed two US Masters titles and a US Open.
The 55-year old golfer from Kansas City believes Campbell can win back-to-back Majors by adding this week's British Open title to his Pinehurst winning trophy.
"He has the game and after the way he won at Pinehurst, obviously he can succeed again this week," Watson said.
After ending his practice round, Norman spoke of his delight in seeing Campbell achieve what the double British Open winning Australian failed to clinch in his career and that is a US Open title.
"He's got the confidence to win back-to-back majors this week and why not!
"Now he knows he can win a major and now he knows he is back to a place where he easily could have won a major a decade ago and he's got every chance of doing that."
