LONDON - New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell has been guaranteed a start in the US$6 million ($9.25 million) Amex Championship starting in Ireland later this month despite his poor result in last week's German Masters.
Campbell left Cologne with a share of 47th place, 17 strokes behind Ireland's Padraig Harrington.
Campbell had arrived in the ancient German city looking for a win to break a 14-month drought and to secure a place in the Amex world golf championship in Ireland on September 30 where the world's top-10 players, including defending champion, Tiger Woods, will compete.
Campbell was lying 22nd on the European Tour Order of Merit and 5363 euro ($10,193) shy of 20th place with the top-20 on the money list at the conclusion of the German event receiving invites to compete in Ireland.
Campbell's Irish cause was first enhanced when both Scotland's Scott Drummond and England's Ian Poulter, ranked a respective 19th and 20th on the money list, both missed the German cut.
He left the course mid-afternoon uncertain if he had secured a place in the Ireland field and it wasn't until Campbell arrived back to his Brighton home in England he learnt of his confirmation in the Amex field.
"It was my goal competing in Germany to get myself in the Amex championship and I'm really pleased to have made it through," he said.
"Aside from the majors, the world golf championships are the next highest ranked tournaments you want to be competing in.
"It was disappointing I struggled with my game in Germany because it's a course I like and one that will also have fond memories especially after winning the 2000 tournament."
Campbell, currently ranked 66th in the world rankings, ended the German week with disappointing rounds of 72, 72, 74 and 74 for a four over par 292 total.
