Michael Campbell was baffled by the unique scoring format despite ending among the top 10 on the first day of the co-sanctioned ANZ Championship at Nelson Bay, New South Wales yesterday.
Campbell holed a 5m birdie putt on the final green of the Horizons Resort course to record 11 points in the modified stableford scoring format event.
The New Zealand No 1 trails Australia's Nick O'Hern, who produced a flawless score of 18 points that included a pair of five-point-scoring eagles and four two-point-scoring birdies.
England's John Bickerton is next best on 14 points, two clear of Steve Webster and Nick Flanagan.
Campbell admitted after his round that he found the scoring format, on occasions, confusing.
"I just had trouble on some holes remembering what the points system was, particularly after tripling one hole," he said.
