Kevin Budden birdied the first extra hole to win the North Harbour strokeplay championship at North Shore Golf Club yesterday.
The 23-year-old had been cruising to victory at seven under par with five holes to play when he double-bogeyed the par-three 14th.
He finished with a 72-hole total of 284, four under, after a final round of par 72.
Storming home from back in the field his Waitemata clubmate Tom Cardno matched that total with closing rounds of 68 and 66.
On the par-five playoff hole in near darkness Cardno missed the green with his second, while Budden birdied from the fringe.
Third, two shots back, were Sam An (Titirangi) and Joon-Sang Chung (Whitford Park). Simon Brownlee (Gulf Harbour), who had a two-shot lead over Budden after 54 holes, crashed to 79 in the final round to be sixth.
