Nelson player Glyn Delany birdied the first playoff hole to win the Auckland golf strokeplay championship at Remuera yesterday.
Delany and the Wellington No 1, Jonathan Cane (Manor Park), had finished level on six-under after 72 holes. On the first extra hole, Delany put his six-iron second close to the pin for a tap-in birdie and the title.
After rounds of 73, 69 and 69 Delany was two clear of Cane with four holes to play, but he bogeyed the 15th and 16th and had to sink a 20-foot birdie putt on the last to force a playoff.
The victory was his second major win of the season, following his success in the Bream Bay Open last month. He was a member of the New Zealand team which contested the Four Nations tournament in Canada.
Cane opened and closed with three-under-par 68s but slipped to 74 and 72 in his second and third rounds.
Third, three shots off the pace, was the national strokeplay champion, Sam Hunt (Rotorua), two shots clear of Brad Shilton (Te Awamutu).
The leading Aucklander was Clarke Osborne in eighth place on 292.
