TORONTO - Australia's Robert Allenby carded a six-under 65 to charge into the lead midway through the second round of the Booz Allen Classic in Potomac, Maryland on Friday, two shots clear of overnight pacesetter Matt Gogel.
Allenby, who has missed the cut in four of his last eight events, struck a rich vein of form at the historic Congressional Golf Club, mixing a single bogey with seven birdies to finish on nine-under 133.
Gogel, who opened with a course record eight-under 63 on Thursday, was even par through four holes and one stroke in front of champion Adam Scott of Australia.
Scott, a winner earlier this season at the rain-shortened Nissan Open, returned a four-under 67 for 135.
South African Ernie Els, who captured his second US Open at the Congressional in 1997, moved into contention with a four-under 67 for 136.
Phil Mickelson signed for a 67 for 138, four under.
World No 1 Vijay Singh was in danger of missing the cut for the second consecutive week, going one-over for the tournament after two holes.
The projected cut is even-par.
