Otago's Samarah Gallaher led the Emerging Junior Tall Ferns with 18 points (7/13 FG, 4/5 FT) and nine rebounds as they edged Tasmania 78-72 in overtime. The Kiwis girls jumped out to a 25-11 lead over the opening quarter, but their opponents finished strongly in the fourth quarter (18-9) to force the extra period.
They now face West Australia Metro, who they beat 71-58 in pool play.
Meanwhile, Palmerston North forward Tia Temata-Frost had a double double to help the Emerging Junior Tall Blacks home 90-62 over Queensland North.
Temata-Frost had 25 points (11/18 FG, 1/2 3pt, 2/4 FT) and 11 rebounds, while Wellington guard Scott Sharp matched that scoring output, hitting 10/10 FT and adding seven assists.
The Kiwis boys also gained an early ascendancy and led 47-22 at halftime. They will meet South Australia Country in the playoff, a team they defeated 90-80 in pool play.
