MEXICO CITY (AP) Leon won the Mexican Apertura final for its sixth first division title after downing America 3-1 in Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Reigning champion America was attempting to secure its 12th championship to surpass Chivas as Mexico's most successful club, but Leon - which was only promoted to the first division in May 2012 - won 5-1 on aggregate over the two legs of the final after Thursday's first game ended 2-0 to Leon.
Mexico divides each season into two parts, like many Latin America countries, with the Clausura tournament set to start on January 3.
"I don't have words to describe this," said Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough, who was a contender of man of the match, said after the game. "We deserved it."
Leon took the lead in the 13th, when Argentine Mauro Boselli pulled away from his marker and hit a low shot into the far corner of the goal from the edge of the area.
