Simon Elliott is on the verge of joining Ryan Nelsen in the English Premiership with both Fulham and Sunderland reportedly chasing the former All Whites midfielder in the January transfer window.
The 31-year-old, who has spent the past six seasons playing in the American MLS, recently had a trial with Fulham and also impressed in the Columbus Crew's 2-1 victory over the west London club during their US tour in July.
Fulham manager Chris Coleman is reportedly looking to strengthen his midfield, considering he will lose the imposing Papa Bouba Diop, who will join up with Senegal to play in next month's African Nations Cup. Spurs midfielder and former Cottager Sean Davis could be another target.
Reports out of the UK also suggest Elliott is being tracked by Premiership struggler Sunderland but Fulham seems the most likely destination.
Elliott has played 54 times for the All Whites since making his debut in 1994 but was dropped for the 1-0 loss against Australia in June. He's expected to be eligible for a work permit because of his international record, with players needing to play 70 per cent of a country's matches to be eligible for a permit.
Elliott joined Columbus Crew in December 2004 after five seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy and has made 149 appearances in the MLS, winning the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup, 2001 US Open Cup and MLS Cup 2002 with the Galaxy. He was also named the club's MVP in 2000.
Nelsen was signed by Blackburn Rovers in January after impressing with MLS side DC United and became only the third Kiwi behind Lee Norfolk and Danny Hay to play in the Premiership.
