WELLINGTON - New Zealand couldn't repeat their time-trial heroics in the men's and women's road races at the world junior cycling championships in Belgium.
Auckland's Rebecca Spence, who won gold in Friday's time trial, finished more than 10 minutes off the pace in 65th place in the women's race at Spa-Francorchamps yesterday after crashing.
Spence was performing strongly before crashing near the start of the final lap.
Te Awamutu's Rushlee Buchnanan finished closer to the pace, 46sec behind winner Rasa Leleivyte in 36th place.
New Zealand's best finisher was Daniel Barry of Nelson, who was 33rd, finishing in the middle of a large pack which was 24sec behind Italian winner Diego Ulissi. Cambridge's Brad Carter was further back in the same pack in 52nd place.
