The futures of Chris Cairns and Craig McMillan in the New Zealand test and one-day teams remain cloudy after chairman of selectors Sir Richard Hadlee labelled them as two big disappointments of the campaign.
Hadlee departed for home yesterday lamenting the dual batting collapses against Australia and India that finished a promising New Zealand campaign in its tracks.
"We really needed to get more from the senior players," Hadlee said. "There were a lot of disappointments; McMillan particularly, hasn't delivered. Chris Cairns got 20s, 30s and one 50; we expected more from him."
Smith replaces Pollock
Opening batsman Graeme Smith will succeed Shaun Pollock as South Africa captain.
Pollock was sacked on Saturday after the host nation failed to get past the first round.
Smith, 22, has played just eight test matches, none of them outside South Africa. He was left out of the original cup squad, but called up as a replacement for the injured Jonty Rhodes.
Bowden TV umpire
New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden has been given a minor role for this week's semifinals.
Bowden was yesterday named as the third umpire, monitoring television replays, for the match between Australia and Sri Lanka in Port Elizabeth tomorrow.
Umpiring appointments made were: Australia v Sri Lanka, David Shepherd (England) and Rudi Koertzen (South Africa). Third umpire, Bowden. Fourth umpire, Aleem Dar (Pakistan). Match referee, Clive Lloyd.
India v Kenya at Durban on Thursday: Steve Bucknor (West Indies) and Daryl Harper (Australia). Third umpire, Simon Taufel (Australia). Fourth umpire, Asoka de Silva (Sri Lanka). Match referee, Mike Procter.
Ponting puzzled
Ricky Ponting is puzzled that the Australians have missed out on man-of-the-match honours on three occasions during their nine-match winning spree.
Ponting was not happy when Kenyan left-arm offspinner Aasif Karim was given the gold watch at Kingsmead instead of Brett Lee.
Karim took three for seven from 8.2 overs after Lee had taken Australia's first cup hat-trick in a blistering eight-over spell of three for 14 that was the spark for his side's five-wicket victory.
