CAPE TOWN - Marvan Atapattu was run out for three as Sri Lanka reached 79 for one after 20 overs against West Indies in their World Cup Group B day-nighter on Friday (South African time).
Sri Lanka won the toss.
West Indies need to win to have a realistic hope of reaching the next phase of the tournament.
Earlier Sanath Jayasuriya cut at Pedro Collins in the second over and top-edged over the slips for four.
He then called for a sharp single, Marvan Atapattu was slow to set off and Collins, following up from his own bowling, picked up the ball just left of the crease and hit the stumps with a diving throw.
Jayasuriya drove the ball back past Collins for four. New batsman Hashan Tillakaratne got an inside edge off Collins, the ball just missing the stumps on the way to the fine leg boundary. Tillakaratne also drove Mervyn Dillon for four through mid-off.
Vasbert Drakes came on after 12 overs. Jayasuriya edged his first ball just short of gully, then edged the next ball between wicketkeeper and first slip for four.
Jayasuriya swept Carl Hooper's off spin fine for four.
