LAHORE - Pakistan's new coach, Javed Miandad, is determined to take some positives from the country's dismal World Cup campaign.
Pakistan failed to reach the Super Six stage, winning only two of their six group matches - against minnows Namibia and Netherlands - and losing to Australia, England and fierce rivals India.
But the 46-year-old former captain said yesterday that he was hopeful of rebuilding the team within a year.
"The most positive message to come from this World Cup is that the players are not bigger than the game.
"In the past after a poor performance it was the board that used to be changed, but this time it is the senior players who have been dropped for disappointing the nation.
"The message is now clear: if they perform they stay, if they don't they have no place in the side."
Miandad has been brought in as coach for the third time since 1999. In his previous two terms, he had to step down after differences with senior players.
"I made mistakes in the past and I have learned from them," he said.
For next month's Sharjah tournament, Miandad will work with new captain Rashid Latif, 34, one of the few survivors. Cup skipper Waqar Younis was among those to go.
