After losing quick wickets early in the day, Wellington recovered to make 272 on the first day of their four-day Shell Trophy encounter against Otago at the Basin Reserve.
At one stage Wellington were 116 for seven, but captain Chris Nevin and Mark Gillespie staged a solid eighth wicket partnership to help their side to a competitive total.
Otago in reply were 42 for three before bad light suspended play a short time ago.
The Shell Trophy matches between Auckland and Central Districts in Auckland and Northern Districts and Canterbury in Whangarei were abandoned for the day due to rain.
