KEY POINTS:
Lawn bowlers Lynsey Armitage, Claire Duke, Julie Keegan and Karen Murphy are Australia's newest sporting world champions after crushing Wales in the final to claim the women's fours title today.
The quartet won the decider 22-6 to cap a strong Australian campaign at the world championships in Christchurch.
Wales skip Anwen Butten conceded defeat after killing the jack on the 16th end, handing Australia its third medal after Kelsey Cottrell claimed bronze in the women's singles and Aron Sherriff and Nathan Rice snared bronze in the men's pairs yesterday.
Twenty four-year-old Armitage, from the Gold Coast, led superbly in the first six ends which the Aussies won to set up the victory.
Facing an 8-0 deficit, the Welsh were able to claim consecutive singles before some superb skipping from Sydney's Murphy allowed the Australians to claim a count of four on the 10th end.
With the lead out to an even dozen, Australia continued to ram home the advantage as Keegan (Noosa) and Duke (Moama) played some impressive ends to all but kill off their opponents' hopes.
"This is unbelievable," Armitage said. "I'm lost for words.
"I don't think I've ever played a better game than that in my life.
"The whole team was simply sensational."
While Armitage, Duke and Murphy have been fixtures in the Australian side for some time, Keegan is a world champion less than a year after making her international debut.
"It hasn't really sunk in," Keegan said.
"We all brought our A-game today and Lynsey was playing off the Richter (scale)."
As the only Australian team member with world championship experience, Murphy, 33, claimed her first gold medal today after capturing silver and bronze in the pairs and another bronze in the singles from her past two campaigns.
"We're absolutely rapt," Murphy said.
"The whole side is very tight. We're the best of friends and we played some fantastic bowls today."
