Christchurch-based archer Ken Uprichard can prepare for his second Olympic Games after having his selection confirmed today.
The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) and Archery New Zealand announced that Uprichard will be the sole New Zealand archer in Athens in August.
The archery competition will take place in the ancient venue of Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens.
From about 300BC Panathinaiko Stadium was the venue for events to celebrate the Greek goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom and skills.
In 1896, the stadium was the venue for the first Games of the modern Olympic era founded by Pierre de Coubertin.
NZOC secretary general Barry Maister said it was good to have archery represented again in Athens.
"New Zealand has had a regular representation at the Olympic Games in the sport of archery since 1984.
"Ken will have gained valuable experience from his time in Sydney and I am sure he is ready to perform with credit."
Uprichard is an experienced archer, having competed at the last Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 as well as international events as varied as the world championships in Beijing in 2001 and New York in 2003, and the Oceania championships in Suva in 2000 and Pago Pago in 2002.
