Three men had to be airlifted from the Tongariro National Park this afternoon.
Taupo's Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was called by the police to Mangaturuturu hut area of the Tongariro National Park where a competitor in the goat alpine race had injured his leg and was unable to get to the track end.
As the helicopter got airborne information was coming in about another man who was incapacitated on the Tongariro crossing.
The helicopter crew located the man on the crossing who had severe cramp and was hypothermic. He was transported to a waiting ambulance at the Mangatepopo carpark before the helicopter set off to retrieve the man with the injured ankle and now a second man with a wrist injury at the nearby Lake Surprise.
Both of these men were flown to Taupo hospital and the hypothermic man who was recovering well was also transported to Taupo hospital.
