A hidden whisky bottle tucked away at the back of a cupboard for decades could prove to be a gold mine for sick Rotorua kids.
The bottle of whisky, in a box marked "do not drink", has a mysterious story that was even the subject of a movie.
And it could bring in thousands of dollars for the Lakes branch of the Child Cancer Foundation, after it was donated to be auctioned at the Canter for Cancer charity cocktail evening next month.
The Rotorua woman who has donated the bottle said her husband had it stashed away for years. As the story goes, the whisky bottle was part of the cargo on the SS Politician which sank off the shores of Eriskay, Scotland in 1941.
The story of the ship was later turned into the film Whisky Galore. Two bottles of the whisky, sold last year, fetched more than £12,000 ($23,000).
