Rotorua's Selwyn School management has concerns about the safety of its students because of an upmarket retail complex proposed to be built next door at the intersection of Fairy Springs Rd and Old Quarry Rd.
Principal Peter Barker made a submission to the developer's resource consent application, saying there was only one exit planned from the complex and that was from Old Quarry Rd.
"This is next to the school and poses significant risk to our students as they enter and exit the school," Mr Barker said.
The developer of the complex, Tony Bradley, said he had met Mr Barker and planned to meet with him again to look at ways to keep students safe.
Mr Bradley has applied for resource consent to build an upmarket retail complex on the former Oderings site, which may include takeaway food outlets, a cafe, bakery, fruit and vegetable store, a butcher, lotto outlet and a florist. Six businesses, including Burger Fuel, have already signed leases subject to resource consent being granted.
