A Rotorua man, who has been found guilty of having sexual connection with a young person, was waiting to be sentenced on two similar charges relating to another girl.
Ashley Blair Young, 22, had been on trial in the Rotorua District Court and a jury last night found him guilty by a majority verdict of 11 to one on two charges of having sexual connection with a person under 16.
The offences were committed at Young's flat between January 1 and June 30, 2009 and involved Young having sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl.
Young was found not guilty of supplying cannabis to the girl and during the trial he was discharged on a charge of grooming the girl for sex.
The jury took four hours to reach their verdicts.
Judge Phillip Cooper told the jury that Young had previously pleaded guilty to two further charges of having sexual connection with a person under 16 and was still to be sentenced on those charges.
In that case, Young had sexual intercourse with a different 13-year-old girl.
Young's name had been suppressed until the end of the trial yesterday.
Judge Cooper remanded Young on bail for sentencing on March 3 and ordered victim reports and a pre-sentence report which was to include a home detention appendix.
However, Judge Cooper told Young that given the circumstances of his offending he was likely to be going to jail.
