A four-year vision became reality yesterday when an underpass connecting two ends of the Te Ara Ahi (Go Thermal by Bike) cycleway was officially opened.
The underpass beneath State Highway 5 at Waiotapu allows cyclists touring the 70km route from Rotorua to Orakei-Korako to cross the busy road safely. It was officially opened by Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa kaumatua Dando Fraser, along with Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters and Rotorua MP Todd McClay, who both cycled the 34km to the tunnel. "It was very enjoyable," Mr McClay said.
"Having not ridden since I was about 8, it's not too difficult, it's something any family can do. My kids are away but we'll come back. It's a great investment of money and something all of Rotorua can be proud of.
