"Don't let our kids grow up without kiwi" is the theme for this year's Save the Kiwi Month.
The campaign is led by Kiwis for Kiwi, which supports on-the-ground initiatives with the ultimate goal to increase kiwi numbers by 2018.
Rotorua's Te Puia has its own Kiwi House and advocacy programme, and supports groups and agencies such as Kiwis for Kiwi to help ensure a future for New Zealand's national bird.
This year the visitor attraction is getting behind Save the Kiwi Month to auction a once-in-a-lifetime whanau kiwi experience on Trade Me. The auction winners will get an exclusive and up-close encounter with Te Puia's two resident kiwi, Kenny and Nohi, during their important monthly health check.
Te Puia senior husbandry officer, Vanessa Heaford, said conservation was a priority at Te Puia. The auction presented a rare chance to meet adult kiwi birds in a safe manner.
