You just never know where Norah Jones is going to pop up next.
After her extraordinary success with her debut album, Come Away with Me, which sold 26 million copies, she has appeared in many guises, from countrified band the Little Willies, more solo success, duets with numerous artists across the genres, and now, part of a fun threesome, Puss N Boots.
Puss N Boots is Sasha Dobson on vocals, acoustic guitar, bass and drums, Catherine Popper on vocals, bass and acoustic guitar, with Jones on vocals, electric guitar and fiddle. It's notable that Jones is not on keyboards. Like The Little Willies, this is country oriented pop with about half the songs composed by the band, and half impressive covers. Like Tom Paxton's Leaving London, Robbie Robertson's Twilight, Rodney Crowell's Bull Rider, Roger Miller's Tarnished Angel and Neil Young's Down by the River.
Showing that they're not just a thrown-together studio unit, Puss N Boots play a number of the songs live and sound at least as convincing in this context. Their own songs are gems, too, Dobson's Sex Degrees of Separation, Popper's Always or Jones' Don't Know What it Means. Aside from their level of enthusiasm and fun it's the harmonies that are the stand-out aspect of Puss N Boots' performance.
