Glamorous actresses, red carpet, paparazzi and ... Triumph motorcycles.
Savage Honeymoon enjoyed its world premiere West Auckland-style at the Force Cinema on Queen St last night.
The cast of the new West Auckland-styled movie arrived aboard the motorcycles, while director and writer Mark Beesley travelled in more movie-conventional style in a white stretch limousine.
Xena star Lucy Lawless knelt and bowed to pay homage to the director in a manner similar to the actions of fans on the sports field.
The usual Shortland Street stars were there, but were outshone by Sophia Hawthorne - Leesa Savage in the movie - resplendent in a very little black dress made of PVC plastic.
Despite the hoopla, many on-lookers were confused about the affair, asking "What is happening?" or "Who is that?"
Beesley was unconcerned. "This is glamorous - in a West Auckland kind of way."
He believes his movie will appeal to New Zealanders. "They will walk out of the theatre and they will want a drink and they will want to make love to their baby. That has got to be a good thing."
Savage Honeymoon initially attracted an R18 censor's rating because of concerns that it presented "conspicuous and substantial" drinking of alcohol without showing its consequences.
The rating was downgraded on appeal, and American producer Steve Sachs thanked Chief Censor Bill Hastings for the free publicity.
Savage Honeymoon tells the story of Mickey and Louise Savage, an ageing, booze-fuelled "Westie" couple who try to reignite their relationship with a second honeymoon. But the kids and Mickey's mum decide to crash the party. The movie opens on Thursday.
