Wellington retailers are being warned to keep an eye out for counterfeit money after a man tried to buy cigarettes with a fake $100 bill.
Police say the man travelled to Wellington from Auckland with two other men late last week and the trio had fake $100 and $50 bank notes in their possession. They appeared in the Wellington District Court yesterday and have been bailed until next month.
Detective Sergeant Martin Todd says retailers should be on the lookout.
"These fake notes vary in colour and texture to the legal tender notes and my advice to retailers is to ensure that any $50 or $100 bank notes being used to purchase low-cost items are carefully checked just to ensure that they are the real thing."
Mr Todd says the men may also have used the notes on their trip down the North Island.
