The country's first hot spa is about to get a $125 million facelift.
The Waiwera hot mineral pools, about 40km north of Auckland, date back to 1875 and are the country's oldest hot pool complex.
Waiwera Thermal Spa Resort chief executive John St Clair Brown said in a statement the first stage of the development was the release of 215 investment luxury apartments.
He said the pools would stay open during the redevlopment over the next three to five years. However the pools would eventually be replaced by a deluxe hotel, wellness spa, conference facilities, shops and restaurants.
He said the Waiwera mineral waters had drawn people to the area for more than hundred years and would be central to the new international spa being developed.
The apartment construction was due to begin in April next year and be completed in December, 2006. About 350,000 people visit the resort each year.
