The 6-year-old Waikanae boy being treated in the Burwood Spinal Unit after allegedly being stabbed by his mother may never walk again.
Clinical director Richard Acland said the boy had suffered significant spinal cord injuries from a knife wound and would remain in the spinal unit for a while. He said the boy was reasonably cheerful.
The boy's 11-year-old sister ran to a neighbour's house for help on the morning of January 2 as their home burned behind her.
She and the 6-year-old were taken to hospital with stab wounds to their backs and a 9-year-old brother was treated for smoke inhalation.
A 31-year-old woman has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and one of arson.
