KEY POINTS:
A Tauranga company director who was yesterday charged with murder has been granted name suppression to give him time to tell relatives and clients that he has been arrested.
The 49-year-old appeared in the Tauranga District Court yesterday after an armed offenders squad raid resulted in him being arrested for the murder of former Waitakere man Grant Trevor Adams, 29.
Adams, nicknamed Granite, disappeared from Tauranga in late 2005.
Police believe he was murdered but have yet to find his body.
The accused man appeared in court before community magistrate Robyn Paterson on charges of murder and of manufacturing methamphetamine
She suppressed the names of the man and his business after an application by duty solicitor Nicholas Dutch.
The man was remanded in custody by consent until Tuesday.
Prosecutor Sean Brennan said police did not consent to the suppression.
"We would be happy for his name to be out there, for people to know he has been arrested and is in custody. Their safety is not in jeopardy, therefore people may come forward," Mr Brennan said.
But, according to Mr Dutch, the man had "quite a big business" and it would be unfair to broadcast his details when police were still gathering evidence.
Tauranga CIB head Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner told the Herald the arrest was the result of hard work by police, not the lure of a $50,000 reward announced on June 19.
"There has been no claim made on the reward offered.
"I'm hopeful that now an arrest has been made, more people will be encouraged to come forward."
