The Maori Television Service board has sparked controversy with the appointment of Canadian John Davie as chief executive.
No official announcement has been made but it is believed the board signed off the position on Friday. Board chairman Derek Fox refused to confirm or deny the appointment yesterday.
Maori language news service Ruia Mai reported yesterday that Mr Davie was an auditor-accountant working in Manila. Mr Davie had no knowledge of Maori language or culture and though he had worked with radio he had little television background. The Maori Language Commission refused to comment.
