The search for missing Hamilton student Cameron Murray has been extended to the lower reaches of the Waikato River.
Volunteers from the Port Waikato search and rescue team spent the weekend scouring the river from Huntly to Tuakau for the 21-year-old Waikato University student.
Meanwhile, his friends spent Friday night walking in central Hamilton handing out pamphlets about their missing mate.
He was last seen in Hamilton's Sohl Bar on Victoria St about 1 am on Saturday, October 21.
One of Cameron's uncles, Bryce Murray, said yesterday that the students had given up their examinations to search for their friend. They will be internally assessed.
"It's a huge sacrifice for them," he said. "They are a great bunch."
Searches of the lower Waikato River from Huntly required specialised boats because the river there was very shallow, Mr Murray said.
It was the first time the river's lower reaches had been searched by boat, he said. It had already been searched twice from the air by the police Eagle helicopter. The helicopter may be used to search again today.
