A robot disguised as a truck is among the colourful entries for today's Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix in Auckland's Domain.
The miniature replica of Transformers character Optimus Prime will compete with the Addams family's modified coffin from Napier and Will and Kate's bridal car from Taranaki for the $10,000 prize.
One hundred trolleys and 500 competitors will test themselves against a 700m course along the twisting Lower Domain Drive from 11am.
Each trolley must have two working brakes and drivers must wear a helmet. Competitors get to perform a 30sec skit as part of their entrance and are judged on creativity, showmanship and speed.
Optimus Prime was created by five friends from Howick who shared a love of the American cartoon. Sam Van de Rheede and his mates started by watching YouTube clips of trolley derbies in other countries and chose the character because it hadn't been used.
"The challenge was to build the truck using recyclable materials in a cost-effective way and to keep the weight down," Van de Rheede said.
They constructed a chassis from steel and formed the shape from polystyrene before coating it with fibreglass, painting it and installing LED lights.
"With a good push", their creation has a downhill speed of 80km/h.
Former Dancing with the Stars performer Hayley Holt and Tammy Davis, from Outrageous Fortune, will drive a modified Red Bull can in a celebrity race.
Fifty cents from every Red Bull sold will go to the Red Cross Christchurch quake appeal.
