"He said, 'I've had nothing today but eights and sixes'. And then one of the other groups said, 'And ones'."
Mr Sills, a retired dairy farmer and member at the club since the age of 15, previously had one hole-in-one to his name - scored about 10 years ago on the club's same ninth hole.
He said he was sceptical when he repeated that feat on the 165m, par 3, fifth hole on Saturday.
"I hit it, and it looked as though it was going to be close ... I thought the ball was probably being hidden by the pin."
The celebrations were "pretty low key" when he and his three playing partners confirmed the feat.
"Any hole-in-one is pretty unexpected, and it's a fluke of chance ... I always think of it as luck, not good golf. They were more excited about it than I was, I think."
As he lined up to tee off on the 113 metre, par 3, ninth hole Mr Sills couldn't resist turning to the group and asking what odds they would give him for another hole-in-one.
"One of them said, '100 to 1'. And I should have taken him up on it."
His shot bounced about 3m from the pin, and the cheering of the group in front confirmed he had holed-in-one again.
"There was a bit of whooping and shouting from them ... frankly, I was a little bit dumbstruck, as were all my four, which I think was natural."
Club vice-president Robert Nathan said the achievement was great for a country club like Northern Wairoa, and all 160-odd members would be thrilled for Mr Sills.
"Val's been here since day one. He was at the construction of the place when it was built."
Mr Blatherwick said he considered himself lucky to have been a part of history.
"It's something you talk about for the rest of your life. 'A hole-in-one? I went around with a guy that got two in a round. That's nothing, mate."
The clubrooms were rocking when they made their way back off the 18th, he said.
"Everybody knew about it before we came in, because there was so much whoohooing on the course. And then when he got in, well, it was more of the same."
Mr Sills said he gladly honoured a golfing tradition and shouted all the members a round of drinks.
Not two rounds? "No, no. Just one ... I hope that everybody got a drink. But anyway, I will catch up with anybody who didn't, in the future."
